Futures Thinking & Strategic Planning (Future of Health)
Participants can apply to 1 or more of the thematic tracks as long as the submissions are unique and novel to each other.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Each type of entry will be independently judged based on the following criteria:
- submits an INNOVATIVE approach to address a certain problem or challenge directly or indirectly related to the COVID-19 pandemic
- proposes a FEASIBLE idea that could be assessed and improved
- demonstrates an EQUITABLE idea which promotes gender and health equity.
- an INCLUSIVE idea whereby the solution includes special considerations for the most vulnerable groups.
- exhibits EFFECTIVE intervention to stimulate health promoting actions by a target population
- has the potential to INFORM AND CONTRIBUTE to regional and/or national health and social development policy
- provides an INNOVATIVE message;
- proposes a CREATIVE engagement strategy to raise awareness on potential problems or issues during COVID-19 or post-COVID-19.
- sparks conversations and INSPIRES action
- provides a CLEAR description to reimagine the future of health and our collective future post COVID-19
- submits an INNOVATIVE idea about the future of health (e.g. workplace, family, health, social interaction) in a compelling way
- demonstrates the use RESEARCH insights and DATA analysis to incorporate into futures thinking and strategic planning.

STEERING COMMITTEE
The Steering Committee provides strategic advice on the overall implementation of the Malaysia Youth open call and will support to judge, evaluate and select finalists. The members bring with them extensive knowledge, commitment and experience in the areas of Social Innovation, Youth Empowerment and Community Impact in Malaysia and across the region

What is an Open Call?
Open calls provide a structured mechanism to solicit diverse feedback over a period of time. Open calls have been widely used by governments, private foundations, and others to spur innovation. More details about open contests for health are available here.
How is this different from all of the other youth open calls?
The solutions that we identify will be compiled into a regional report and shared with national, regional, and global health experts. In addition, exceptional ideas will be recognized with prizes and linked to potential mentors and capacity building opportunities.
What is Social Innovation in Health?
The World Health Organization defines Social Innovation in Health as “A solution (process, product, practice, market mechanism) implemented through diverse organizational models. The solution has been developed by a range of actors in response to a systemic health challenge within a geographic context. It profoundly challenges the current system status quo and has enabled healthcare to be more inclusive, effective and affordable.”
What is futures thinking?
Futures thinking is a process where an individual thinks and anticipates a possible future. It allows an individual to address and shape the desired future in all aspects of social life by looking and reflecting at the changes that occur and may occur around him or her. The individual foresees that these changes affect the future and that he or she has the ability to influence these changes and hence create the future (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, 2020; United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, 2020).
Who is supporting this open call?
This open call is organized by Impact Hub Kuala Lumpur and is implemented in partnership with Social Entrepreneurship to Spur Health (SESH), Social Innovation in Health Initiative (SIHI) and is supported by the World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office and WHO Representative Office to Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
Can I contribute multiple submissions?
Yes. You may also submit for different categories at the application process. However, in the interest of fairness to all other participants only 1 of your ideas may be selected to qualify for the Designathon and mentoring.
Do I need to be in a specific place to participate?
No. We accept submissions from anywhere in Malaysia that have been impacted by COVID-19 as long as you are Malaysian between 18 to 30 years old.
Can I submit something without providing my name?
Yes. This is acceptable, although we may need to contact you to follow up, with the assurance that your anonymity would be guaranteed.
Can I submit as an individual or with a group?
You can submit either as an individual or as a group of up to four (4). For group submissions, all of the group members must be 18-30 years old. Entries must be initiated by youth members.
What will happen to my application if i am unable to attend the Designathon and mentoring?
Selected finalists who do not participate in the Designathon and/or mentoring will be disqualified from the open call. All selected finalists will be expected to commit to the Designathon and mentoring support.
Do i need to have an incorporated business before i enter the open call?
Since the open call is for early stage ideas, concepts and proposals, participants do not need to have an incorporated business in order to enter the open call.
How will i know if my team has been selected as one of the finalists?
Selected participants will be notified by email by 24 May – 2 June 2021. Announcements will also be made on our social media pages
